Day of Atonement | AA:05

In this episode we learn about the holiest day in all of Judaism: Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement through the lens of Messianic prophecy.  What does an ancient feast have to do with the future?  How will Jesus’ second coming impact the Jews?  What is the truth about replacement theology and more?  All of this and more!

Types of Religious Authorities in Ancient Israel

  • Rabbis = teachers
  • Scribes = Pre-rabbinic teachers, transcribers, teachers, etc
  • Levites = men from the tribe of Levi that were set apart for service to God. All priests were Levites, but not all Levites were priests.  They helped maintain the Tabernacle and the Temple, were supported by tithes, and were fed from the food offered as sacrifice.
  • Priests = Levites who filled the role of mediator between God and man to offer sacrifices
  • High Priest = the head priest who, once a year, would offer a sacrifice to purify himself and the accidental sins of the nation before entering the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle/Temple to offer incense in the Presence of God’s Spirit.
    • The High Priest would then conduct the goat lottery where one goat would be sacrificed as an offering for the people’s sin, and another goat (the scapegoat) would be sent out into the wilderness to die.

“For on this day shall atonement be made for you to cleanse you.  You shall be clean before the Lord from all your sins.” – Leviticus 16:30

“There is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” – 1 Timothy 2:5

“Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.  For we do not not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weakness, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.  Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:14-16

“But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the greater and more perfect tent he entered one for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.  For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit, offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.” – Hebrews 9:11-14

“…a partial hardening has come upon Israel, until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in, and in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, ‘The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob; and this will be my covenant with them when I take away their sins.” – Romans 11:25b-26
