“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” – Genesis 1:1
The Bible begins with these ten simple words. Often times we read them without much thought as we progress through the creation story but within these ten simple words God has given us a glimpse into his His who He is and what He is capable of.
Before the moment we read about in Genesis 1:1, there was nothing. Try to imagine it: utter darkness that is darker than the deepest black pierced only by an overwhelming silence. There was nothing except the Father creating, the Son who was the very Word used in creating (see John 1), and the Holy Spirit who was present in creation (see Genesis 1:2). But then, all at once, God created!
In these ten simple words God created everything. The heavens, the earth, and everything in them. At this moment God shows his power and glory by created everything physical from the atoms which bond into molecules to the scientific laws that govern all of creation. He was creating faith and reason, not as adversaries but as complementary partners in our existence. In His all-knowingness God prepared all of creation to testify about Him to us that we would believe and walk with him for His glory and our good, and as the story continues we find that it was good.
