Je Suis Charlie, or Remember the Dead

A man holds a placard which reads "I am Charlie" to pay tribute during a gathering at the Place de la Republique in ParisI’m sure most have seen the updates on BBC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, RT, or any other news outlet about the attack on French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo.  I’ve only ever seen a few covers of the paper and everyone has seemed like it would surely offend somebody.  But let us not forget that the point of satire is to point out the most ridiculous aspects of our societies and to make us laugh.

I have heard some people criticize, almost to the point of excusing the attacks, the paper for it’s content as the cause of the shootings that took place.  This is a sad day for journalists, bloggers, and anyone else who celebrates and embraces free speech.  Pray with me for the dead, and for a quick end to the manhunt in northern France.
